In Ayurveda, the Abhyangam massage has become popular because of its effective way of conditioning the body. Abhyangam can be used therapeutically. The massage is designed around each individual, to suit his or her disease or condition. An ayurvedic physician can assess this and will then decide on the appropriate oils and the exact way of massage.
Abhyangam can increase the production of white blood corpuscles and antibodies, which provide more resistance against viruses and diseases. Virechanam is the intake of oral medicines leading to the elimination of toxins through the anal route. It eliminates excess bile toxins from the mid zone of the body. Virechanam constitutes one of the treatments of Panchakarma. When the digestive tract is clean and toxic-free, it benefits the entire body system. As a result, the person’s appetite increases, body strength enhances and the person becomes active and buoyant. Thus virechanam also functions as an excellent rejuvenative procedure. Herbal powder, medicated castor oil, or herbal paste is commonly used as the purgative medicine. Avipathychoornam is the herbal powder generally used for the treatment. It is a mixture of herbs like turpith, embellia fruits, dry ginger,lotus,cardamom, long pepper,konch,sweet flag, cinnamon, etc. The treatment usually begins early in the morning. The person consumes the appropriate herbal medicine in empty stomach. The medicine does a good cleansing of the entire digestive system. And within 1 to 2 hours he empties his bowels, expelling along with it, all the accumulated toxins. The dose of medicines, diet patterns etc. are to be strictly followed as per the doctor’s recommendation.
Raktamokshana is the procedure in which impure blood is let out or purged from the body through artificially created opening or by using different instruments.
A special treatment in ayurveda, Agni Karma is an application of heat to a diseased part with the help of a metal rod. In this treatment, the spots are selected according to the ayurvedic acupuncture points or viddha Chikitsa. Agni Karma is ideal for curing ailments such as sprains, heel pain, headaches, sciatica and arthritis. It is usually done for 2 to 3 minutes.
Elakizhi (also ilakizhi) is a bolos bag massage with medicinal leaves. It is very effective in improving the strength of muscles, relieving body pain and curing diseases such as arthritis and paralysis. In this treatment, herbal leaves are applied to the whole body in bundles with hot medicated oils. The treatment is also known by the name Patra Swedam.
Ricinus, drum stick, tamarind and calotropis gigantia are among the herbal leaves used for the treatment. The leaves are fried together in neem or caster oil until a brown color is attained. Lemon pieces and coconut scapes are then added to it. All these are tied in cloth boluses and dipped in medicated oil to massage the body. When the process is complete, patient is given a bath in moderately hot water

Mutta Kizhi is one of the forms of Kizhi. In this treatment, boiled egg and herbal powders are applied to the whole body along with hot medicated oils.
Mutta Kizhi is very effective in facial paralysis and hemiplegia. This treatment has to be done for 45 minutes per day for a period of 7 to 14 days.
Udwarthanam is an Ayurvedic body scrub that details the specific use of an herbal paste called lepam, which is made from dry grain, medicated milk and a variety of oils. In Udwarthanam, the body is massaged after an application of the aforementioned herbal paste to the skin. A warm bath that accompanies Udwarthanam then washes away the paste, all the while emitting a lovely scent of leaves.
Udwarthanam softens and exfoliates the skin, improves muscle tone, and is a favoured treatment for those with sensitive skin. In addition, Udwarthanam improves blood circulation and eases joint pains, and is also known to be effective against certain skin diseases. Pizhichil is an ayurvedic treatment for all kinds of skeletal and muscular diseases, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, osteoarthritis, lumbago, sciatica and neuropathy. This treatment is done by pouring lukewarm herbal oil over the body from a particular height with a regular speed of flow. Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda medicine that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye'). It was developed by vaidyas (practitionars of Ayurveda) in Kerala, India for use in sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiras 'head' and dhara 'flow'. The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.
Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.
There are specialized forms of shirodhara called thyladhara, ksheeradhara, thakradhara-insomnia and jaladhara
In Sirovasti, medicated oil is made to stand on the patient’s head for specific periods. The oil is contained in a close-fitting leather cap, made leak proof with black-gram powder. Constant temperature conditions are maintained throughout.
This treatment is indicated for loss of tactile sensation, facial paralysis, sleeplessness, dryness of nostrils and throat, increased intracular pressure, severe chronic headache etc.
In this process specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept inside the lower back with herbal paste boundary. This treatment lasts for 45 minutes to 1 hour and it is good for any type of back pain and spinal disorders.

A combination of decaution, honey, oil and other herbal medicine are pushed through the anus by a special device called Vasthi yanthram. After evacuation he is given medicated bath and specially made rice pudding with milk & sugar.
This karma is indicated mainly in the vititation of vata. Along with the sneha vasti, kashaya vasti imparts much more benefits to the body. The procedure is to be done between 10 am and 12 noon. Person must undergo all the preliminary procedures. The medicine for vasti is a combination of decoction, medicated oil, pastes etc. This will be administered through the anal route using a special instrument. The person will be observed throughout the procedure. After some
time he develops the urge to evacuate. Hot water bath and special diet will be given after complete evacuation. A combination of 3 kashaya vasti and 5 sneha vasti or 6 kashaya vasti and 9 sneha vasti or 12 kashaya vasti and 18 sneha vasti is advocated depending upon the condition.
This is an eight – day treatment consisting of eight therapeutic enemas, prescribed for patients who have a Kapha constitution and disease due to Vata disorders . The treatment begins with an Anuvasana , alternates with three Niroohas and concludes with two Anuvasanas .
This 15-day therapy is prescribed for patients with Pitta constitution suffering from Vata disorders . For the first 12 days, Anuvasana and Nirooha are given alternately . In the last three days, Anuvasana is given repeatedly .

Tharpanam ayurvedic therapy is said to improve eye sight, strengthen the optic nerve and prevent different eye diseases. It is basically an eye-cleansing process and gives a cooling effect to eyes. During tharpanam, the medicated oil is retained over the eye which is bordered with a thick herbal combination that prevents the oil from seeping out of the enclosure. Another therapy associated with tharpanam is pudapakam or pudapakom, which entails similar procedures.
Takra dhara is a form of shirodhara, an Ayurvedic treatment method which involves continuous flow of medicated butter milk to the centre of forehead continuously for up to an hour a day. The process can last from 7 to 21 days. It is a cure for vata predominant diseases, relieves tension and cures certain types of skin diseases.
Takra means butter milk, from my earlier post you have an idea of shirodhara, what they do here is boil milk and medicines and add little curd keep it over night, it is then churned and shirodhara is done with that buttermilk. It is very cooling and very effective in skin diseases, like psoriasis.
Nasyam is the instillation of herbal medicines through the nostrils. Its impacts are very diverse. It removes mucous clogs, cleans and clears the head channels, and also stimulates the brain cells and central nervous system. It is one among the five Panchakarma treatments.

Patients suffering from various ailments associated with the ear are given the treatment called Karnapooranam. This is process by which, medicated fumes are applied to the ears for 5 to 10 minutes. It also helps to keep the ears clean and healthy.
This method of treatment involves inhaling and exhaling of medicinal smoke. It is a fine treatment for various sinus and respiratory diseases. Acute sinusitis, asthma, sneezing, infections of the lower respiratory tract, cough etc. are treated using Dhoomapanam. The removal of mucous toxins also rejuvenates the person's mental status and provides him with ample freshness. The smoke helps to dry the excessive mucous, and also lowers pain-causing inflammations of the sinus cavities and respiratory tract. The herbs and spices used here have special properties to act against these mucous wastes.
